Greek Easter is coming soon and this time the weather is going to be great! I am going to tip you off with some great value for money divine destinations that combine proximity with all the greek orthodox rituals which are outstanding – Resurrection Night is kind of like New Years Eve!
So I start with beloved Crete – Chania side!
Like an island within an island, there is Ammos Hotel: a stylish mini-resort which sits perfectly on a fine sandy beach, well away from the bustle of the city yet only five km from the Venetian harbour and old town of Chania. Smart design, attention to every detail, instinctive hospitality, great food and an intimate approach are some of the ingredients which make our small “island” a special getaway.
With 33 refurbished rooms and suites overlooking the Cretan Sea our intimate, independent hotel has one of the highest numbers of repeat visitors of any hotel in Greece. Regular fans keep returning for the service, exceptional value and the striking, contemporary interiors designed by acclaimed Greek architect Elisa Manola and hotelier- and beloved friend – Nikos Tsepetis. Every year, Nikos – an incredible host and passionate design aficionado who often travels to a city just to discover a new interiors shop – surprises his guests by “revisiting” parts of the hotel. In 2012 he completely revamped the lobby and restaurant, a breezy open-plan space that opens up to a seaside terrace. The latest addition is an.. impressive collection of mismatched dining chairs, ranging from mid century modern classics by Prouve and Tapiovaara, to Ercol, the Brazilian Campanas and the novelty of fresh designers like Francois Azanbourg, Adam Goodrum, Nendo and Tom Dixon. This eclectic collection, which echoes the ethos of the hotel’s overall design concept, is offset by a colourful Bisazza wall mosaic, arabesque tiled floors, a cabinet of curios sourced from local flea markets, and specially commissioned wall plates by the extraordinary artist Konstantinos Kakanias.
Ammos (which means “sand” in Greek) is proud of its location as it is right on the sandy beach, far away from the noisy main road and yet only 5 km from the Venetian harbour and the city of Chania, 300 meters from the beautiful pine and eucalyptus grove and the sandy coves of Agii Apostoli, 2 km from the cute little village of Galatas and Daratsos and 7 km from the village of Platanias (the centre of night life). Crete is a land of astonishing diversity and ammos hotel is a perfect base for your daily excursions.
The London Times food critic, Alex Renton, who visited in April 2012, was so impressed that he hailed the hotel as a “known foodie destination”.
Setting is simply unbeatable: Stunning interiors and a balcony and terrace looking out right on the beach front (food and drinks are accompanied by the sounds of the sea and dramatic sunsets).
Info: Kitchen stays open all day long. We start early in the morning with our signature buffet breakfast and we continue serving till late into the night (the restaurant also caters for our guests at the pool and beach area).
Also top destination for families as its on the beach and also has a fantastic playroom for your kids to defuse their energy! For more details check the site Ammoshotel.com.
“Set on a sandy bay just outside Chania, Ammos is refreshingly different to the many characterless resorts of northern Crete. Owner Nikos Tsepetis’ exacting standards and passion for design are evident throughout this small, family-friendly resort with its Scandinavian-style interiors. Everything is designed for easy living-from smoothies served at your sun lounger to Cretan treats in the all-day restaurant. The tiny spa’s massages are exceptional. Tsepetis’ knowledge of Crete is encyclopedic: he will direct you to the island’s most authentic tavernas and scenic trails.”
