Last year, the Guardian reported 64% of women were willing to buy pre-owned pieces and, it is thought by 2028, 13% of the clothes in women’s wardrobes are likely to be second-hand.
It can be argued that celebrities are one driving factor. In fact, 7 in 10 women say seeing a celebrity wear vintage or a recycled look encourages them to shop second-hand.
Inspired by this, saveonenergy.com/uk/ analysed 50 of the best vintage red carpet outfits of all time*, in a study seen here, to find out which celebrity is the greatest influence.

From 50 of the best vintage red carpet outfits of all time, a final 10 were whittled down and voted on by 3,446 fashionistas.
In first place we find Friends icon Jennifer Aniston, with almost a quarter of all votes (24%), in vintage John Galliano for Christian Dior – the sublime white silk dress Aniston wore to the SAG Awards 2020, when she famously bumped into ex-husband Brad Pitt! This moment caused ripples in the media and in hearts across the world, so is it any wonder Aniston tops the list in this vintage look?
In second place (17%) are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, in all-black vintage John Galliano for Christian Dior, a look the twins wore to the 2015 Met Gala. But this isn’t surprising. The twins are mavericks on the Met Gala red carpet and have sported several vintage looks over the years, from Chanel to Dior and Paco Rabanne. Incidentally, 5 looks from the Olsen twins made SaveOnEnergy’s 50-of-the-best study!
In third place (15%) is Reese Witherspoon, in vintage Christian Dior. Witherspoon wore the 1957 champagne-coloured Dior dress in 2006, to the 78th Annual Academy Awards, when she scooped the award for Best Actress in Walk the Line.
A Moment for Kim Kardashian: Vintage Queen
Kim Kardashian’s striking red Christian Dior AW97 look, which she wore to the 2nd Annual American Influencer Awards (2019), is fourth favourite, with 13% of the votes. But this isn’t all we want to commend Kim for. The Kardashian is featured 6 TIMES in SaveOnEnergy’s 50-of-the-best study, more than any other celebrity, which makes her one of the greatest influencers in vintage fashion. With iconic outfits from designers including Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Dior, Versace and Mugler. As the Guardian notes: “Like it or loathe it, when Kim Kardashian wears something, people take notice.”
Eco-Friendly Fashion: How is Vintage Clothing ‘Green’?
Of course, the issue is greater than seeing celebrities dressed in gorgeous looks from a bygone era, it’s important to note that vintage clothing can promote and support a greener lifestyle. Vintage clothes are a simple way to reduce, reuse and recycle clothing. Often, vintage pieces are of greater quality, made to last longer than cheap mass-produced fast fashion. Plus, vintage clothing can be timeless in design and therefore more likely to remain “in vogue”, giving you value for money and ensuring pieces do not end up tossed in a landfill.
