An air of nostalgia will waft through the island of Spetses this autumn as the Tweed Run returns for a fifth year and promises to be even more spectacular than ever! From the 19th to 21st of October 2018 scores of cycling enthusiasts will once again meet up at the iconic Poseidonion Grand Hotel in order to explore the island, dressed up in their finest vintage garb.
The Tweed Run, which first began in London, has ‘travelled’ to several major cities all over the world and arrived in Greece for the first time in November of 2014 within the context of the centenary celebration of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel. Since then, it has proven to be one of the most popular events on the island of aromas, with the typically British style complementing perfectly the aristocratic character of Spetses. Classic bicycles, chic appearances dominated by a vintage tweed dress code and English tradition will overtake the island for three days once again as the cyclists indulge in leisurely rides through the Spetses countryside, stopping off at the local beauty spots and enjoying the charm of the island’s culture and surroundings.
A charming bike run with the Argosaronic gulf as a backdrop, traditional picnics accompanied by the sounds of jazz, stop-offs for tea in true British style, beauty pageants for the most impressive dresser, treasure hunts and fun dexterity games are just some of the surprises awaiting participants in the most stylish event of Spetses. The unique three-day affair will reach a climax again this year with an extravagant party in the Poseidonion’s lobby in celebration of the good old days of yesteryear.
The Tweed run is organised again this year with the kind support of the Hellenic Bicycle Museum, with Hendrick’s Gin sponsoring the event, one of the most well-known British brand who will definitely bring its own distinctive style to the revelry.
Hendrick’s, the ‘most unusual’ Gin, will make its presence felt at this year’s Tweed Run. Hendrick’s Gin is one of the top super-premium gins to be produced in small quantities and distilled in Girvan Scotland. The unconventional distillation methods used in combination with the unique blend of extracts such as rose and cucumber create a gin that is truly one of a kind. This rare spirit, so intricately delicious and so delightfully weird, has a unique flavour and a distinct character which makes it one of the most best-loved Gins worldwide. Registration has already begun! Now it’s time to polish your bike, pick out your best vintage outfit, don your most elegant hat and bring your warmest smile to the Poseidonion Square for a jolly old trip down memory lane.
A tradition which first began in London in 2009, the Tweed Run involves a group of cyclists dressing up in traditional vintage clothing and enjoying a bike ride through the streets of the English capital, stopping off for the proverbial cup of tea and picnics. The event was first brought to Spetses in Greece in 2014 by the Poseidonion Grand Hotel as part of the 100 year anniversary celebration of the emblematic hotel. Since then, the event returns to the island of aromas every year, gaining more and more fans as it does so.
Poseidonion Grand Hotel
The imposing historic hotel first welcomed its guests on Spetses in the summer of 1914 as a result of its visionary benefactor, Sotirios Anargyros. Today, more than a century after opening its doors, it continues to be a symbol of hospitality that has remained faithful to its cosmopolitan past, with architecture reminiscent of iconic hotels in the French Riviera. It remains a majestic landmark on the island to this day, exuding a sense of elegance which has made it a contemporary myth.
